A highly attractive vintage Rolex Datejust ref. 1603, dating to circa 1974 and distinguished by its rich matte-blue pie-pan dial, engine-turned steel bezel and period folded-link Jubilee bracelet.
The dial is a genuine Rolex matte-blue example produced for the four-digit Datejust generation. Its deep blue finish shifts subtly under changing light, complemented by applied baton hour markers, matching silver-tone hands and aged tritium luminous plots. The stepped outer edge of the pie-pan dial gives the watch the depth and character associated with early Datejust design.
Its 36mm stainless-steel Oyster case is paired with the reference 1603’s distinctive engine-turned bezel, offering a slightly sportier alternative to the white-gold fluted bezel found on the reference 1601. The acrylic crystal retains the traditional Cyclops magnifier above the date aperture at three o’clock.
Inside is the automatic Rolex calibre 1575 with hacking seconds. Introduced during the later production period of the four-digit Datejust, the hacking function allows the seconds hand to be stopped for more precise time-setting.
The watch is fitted to a period folded-link Rolex Jubilee bracelet, which gives it the light and flexible feel characteristic of Rolex bracelets from this era. It is also accompanied by its original period Rolex green leather-over-wood presentation box, commonly referred to by collectors as the “coffin” box.
The watch presents in attractive vintage condition, with age-related marks and wear consistent with its approximately 50-year history.
