Cartier Tank Must Mechanical

Circa 1978-1981

An exceptionally elegant early Must de Cartier Tank, dating to approximately 1978–1981 and powered by a manually wound mechanical movement.

This example features one of the more unusual minimalist dial configurations, with a warm cream dial free from the traditional Roman numerals. Instead, the design is pared back to a pair of blued hands, the Must de Cartier signature and a discreet Cartier monogram at six o’clock. The result is wonderfully clean and gives the watch an almost jewellery-like quality.

The small rectangular case is constructed from 925 sterling silver with 20-micron gold plating, Cartier’s characteristic vermeil construction of the period. It is finished with Cartier’s signature blue cabochon crown and paired here with a deep burgundy leather strap.

Its compact proportions are exactly what make these early Tanks so appealing. Slim, refined and deliberately understated, it wears as a true vintage dress watch rather than a modern oversized interpretation of the design.

The caseback retains its Cartier Paris markings, 925 silver hallmark, “ARGENT” designation, 20-micron gold-plating stamp and individual serial number.
